The calf implant procedure is used to create fullness and additional shape in the lower leg. This procedure is suitable for both men and women who are unhappy with the shape and size of their calf muscles to the point where they will avoid wearing any clothes that may expose this area.
Some people, even with rigorous exercise, may not be able to increase the size of their calf muscles. This can often be a due to an injury or the fact that they are unable to develop due to certain muscular disorders. Calf implants can correct disproportionate muscles as a result of both physical and hereditary defects such as bowleggedness and clubfoot. Calf implants can also be used to correct abnormalities resulting from injury or nerve diseases that result in muscle deterioration including polio, club foot, spina bifida. Calf implants use silicone implants which, similar to breast and buttock implants, come in various sizes.
The calf implant procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic and takes between one and two hours per calf to perform. A small incision is made in the crease behind your knee at the front of the gastroc muscle. A pocket is then created big enough to ensure the implant fits securely. The implant is then placed in pockets overlying the existing gastrocnemius muscle. The procedure is then repeated if necessary on the second leg. You may choose to have either one or two implants depending on the look and shape you wish to achieve. The surgeon will then examine the legs to ensure the result looks natural and even and if the result appears good then the incision will be stitched back together, usually using dissolvable stitches, creating larger and more defined calf muscles.
The area will be swollen for the first couple of weeks and compression garment will need to be worn to help this for two weeks day and night. It is also advised that instep or heel is worn to ease the pressure on the muscle. Gentle exercise can gradually be introduced after the procedure and is encouraged to allow the muscle to become accustomed to the implant. Full exercise will have to wait up to six weeks. A series of follow up appointments will need to be made to ensure you are recovering well.
