Liposuction and Fat Removal

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure used for fat removal. Its aim is to contour and shape the body whilst removing stubborn areas of fat that cannot be shifted through diet and exercise. Liposuction achieves the best results when you are at your ideal weight and have maintained that weight for a significant period of time. It is crucial to understand that Liposuction is not, and should not, be used as a weight loss method. Most popular areas for Liposuction include:

  • Stomach
  • Hips or love handles (also known as flanks)
  • Thighs
  • Back
  • Chin

During this procedure several areas can be treated at one time and it can even be performed in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast enlargement. However, you would need to discuss this and get conformation with a specialist consultant or cosmetic surgeon. Liposuction is also a popular procedure for men and is often used to reduce the fat around the male breast area. This procedure is known as Gynecomastia and it is very effective.

The Benefits of Having Liposuction

Changing your shape can make you feel more attractive and you will often find that clothes will fit better. For both men and women liposuction can achieve great physical and mental results. This can lead to and increase confidence and self esteem. The key is to maintain realistic expectations and these will need to be discussed in depth with your surgeon.

The Liposuction Procedure

What Does the Liposuction Procedure Involve?

Liposuction is usually performed under a general anaesthetic however when only one area or a small amount of liposuction is required and your surgeon feels that sedation or a local anaesthetic is suitable this is also an option. Your surgeon will assess the areas and then make a tiny incision, usually only about two to three millimetres wide. A hollow metal tube, also known as a cannular, is inserted and used to help break up the fat by pushing and pulling it through the layers breaking up the fat cells. A vacuum pump or a syringe is used to remove the fat and any fluid that may have been injected to assist with the procedure and breaking up the fat. The opening of the incision can be closed with a dissolvable suture or stitch. Overtime scars will fade and in most cases will be barely visible. The procedure can last between thirty minutes to two hours depending on how many areas of liposuction you have.

After the Liposuction Procedure

Some patients can be discharged on the same day as their procedure although depending on the extent of surgery you may be required to have an overnight stay in hospital. The extent of surgery will determine how long you will need off work however, it is usually between one and two weeks depending on the nature of your job and what you do on a daily basis. After the procedure there will be some swelling and bruising around the operated areas. These can last up to four weeks so it is essential to wear a support garment for approximately one month after surgery to help reduce this. Gentle exercise can gradually be introduced a few weeks after the procedure. Full exercise will have to wait up to six weeks. A series of follow up appointments will need to be made to ensure you are recovering well.
