Breast Reduction Information

What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that enables women with large breast to reduce their breast size and create a more proportionate body shape.

The Benefits of Having Breast Reduction

Breast reduction cosmetic surgery is beneficial for women with large breasts which can cause physical discomfort in terms of back pain and can make women feel extremely self conscious. Large breasts may stop women from doing certain things such as sporting activities like running or swimming, and they may also be restricted to wearing a certain style of clothing. In certain cases women may only be capable of sleeping in certain positions. Having breast reduction surgery can help achieve a more uplifted and youthful appearance as well as making the breasts smaller and more symmetrical. The results this procedure can bring are extremely liberating in terms of confidence. It also makes the body look a lot more proportionate and can alleviate back pain. It is best to be at your optimum weight before going ahead with the breast reduction procedure.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

What Does the Breast Reduction Procedure Involve?

The breast reduction procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic and can take between 2 and 3 hours depending on the extent or the reduction and how much tissue needs to be removed. The surgeon will make an anchor shaped incision which goes around the nipple and vertically down the centre of the breast towards the natural breast crease and under. As part of the procedure it is common for the surgeon to reposition the nipples so they are in the correct place and they fit with the new smaller shape of the breast. This may affect the ability to breast feed and also the sensation in that area however, repositioning is not always needed and this will be discussed with the surgeon.

After the Breast Reduction Procedure

After the procedure you will need a 2 night stay in hospital and you will need to take approximately 2 weeks off work. A support bra will also need to be worn for six weeks day and night to assist with healing and to support the breasts. You are usually required to have a one and two week check up with a nurse and a six week check up with your surgeon.
