Chin implants, also known as chin genioplasty or mentoplasty, are used to strengthen the jaw line and bring the chin into better balance with other facial features. Chin implant surgery is often considered by men and women who have a receding chin and would like to make the jaw line stronger and more defined. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with nose reshaping surgery.
Having a chin augmentation can help to achieve a more proportionate face, as the size of the chin can often alter the perceived size of the nose. Chin surgery helps balance your face making you more confident in your appearance. Like breast implants, chin implants are available in different sizes to suit the patient's needs.
Chin Implant surgery is performed under a general anesthetic and can take between an hour and two hours to perform. The surgeon will make a small incision over the front of your jawbone to create a tiny pocket and insert the implant. Stitches or surgical screws may be needed to hold the implant in place. In some cases the surgeon will need to remove some of the bone or slide part of the bone to re-position the chin point. If this is needed the surgeon will need to make an incision inside the mouth. With some people liposuction is performed at the same time to make the chin appear more contoured. The incision is then closed usually using dissolvable stitches and they will be some bruising and swelling around the area.
The chin will need to be taped up for a week and a supportive brace may need to be worn whilst you sleep to help the implant heal in the best position. You will experience some discomfort and it may be difficult to talk and smile for a few days. Your consultant or surgeon will discuss any eating restrictions and dental hygiene that will need to be carefully followed after surgery. It is important to understand that it may take up to three months before the final face shape becomes clear.
