Gynecomastia

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the cosmetic surgery procedure for male chest or breast reduction. This can be a sensitive subject for men however it is quite a common condition. During puberty most teenage boys will often develop fat tissue around the chest area. This usually subsides naturally within a year or so however it can remain for about 10% of men for the rest of adulthood. The seriousness of the condition will vary with each individual. Although it is not a medically threatening or life threatening condition, many men feel strongly about wanting to change the shape of their chest away. They may avoid bare-chested activities and exercise such as swimming, sunbathing and changing or showering in public, to prevent exposing their chest area.

The Benefits of Having Gynecomastia

The cause of the fatty tissue is not known but it has been linked to effects such as hormonal imbalances, weight gain and can be a side effect from taking certain medication. The most effective way of correcting this is using liposuction, which removes the fat cells that have developed in the chest. Male breast reduction surgery can completely change the lives of men who feel restricted by their chest shape. Male cosmetic surgery can increase one's self confidence and introduce a new way of life, allowing men to participate much more and live life to the full.

The Gynecomastia Procedure

What Does Gynecomastia Involve?

The procedure is liposuction which can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. A hollow metal tube, which is also known as a Cannula, is inserted through a small incision. This is used to break up the fat beneath the skin. A syringe or vacuum pump is then used to remove the fat and any fluid that has been used to help break up the fat. In some cases the surgeon may want to remove excess breast tissue to give a better result. This can be performed at the same time as liposuction and this will involve the surgeon making a small incision around bottom half of the nipple. This procedure is extremely effective and scarring is minimal as the incision is only a few millimeters wide. The procedure can take 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the technique and the extent of the surgery.

After the Gynecomastia Procedure

After surgery there will be some swelling and bruising around the treated area. To help reduce this you will need to wear a firm Lycra garment for a few weeks after the procedure. The swelling should go down after a few weeks however, it may be a couple of months before the full effect of the breast reduction surgery is apparent. Most Gynecomastia patients can resume full activity within a few weeks. A few days off work will be required to recover and exercise can be slowly introduced after a few weeks.
