Liposuction is a fat removal procedure which is popular for men who would like to sculpt or reshape their body and remove any stubborn areas of fat. Liposuction is not a weight loss method and is only recommended for use when diet and exercise have been tried. For best results and for the procedure to be most effective you need to already be at your optimum weight.
Having liposuction can help men achieve a more youthful physique and appearance which some men perceive to be linked to career enhancement and success.
The most popular areas of Liposuction for men include:
Flanks are a popular area for male liposuction. These are the fat deposits around the waste that are well known for being extremely tough to get rid of even with strict diet and exercise. With liposuction much of the fat from this area can be removed leaving long lasting great results.
The stomach or more commonly referred to as 'beer belly' is another popular area for male liposuction. This fat is also hard to get rid of through diet and exercise and can also be part of a man's genetic make-up which is unavoidable. Liposuction is not a weight loss method however it can be used to help shape and sculpt the area creating a more desirable body shape.
The chest area is also a popular area for male liposuction. The correct medical term for this procedure is Gynecomastia. It is a common condition which can be caused by fat residing in the chest area from puberty; it can also be linked to hormone imbalances and weight gain. Men with fat in this area can often be very self-conscious. The fat can easily be removed with liposuction creating a much more masculine chest shape.
Liposuction is usually performed under a general anaesthetic however if only a small amount is needed it is possible to be done under local anaesthetic or sedation. Tiny incisions are made in the skin, usually two to three millimeters wide. A hollow metal tube known as a cannula is used to break up the fat beneath the skin which is then removed by a syringe or vacuum pump. It is often helpful to use ultrasound waves or an injection of fluid to help break up the fat. The incision can be closed with a stitch or a dissolvable suture. The procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the extent of surgery.
Depending on how many areas of liposuction you have had you may need between one to two weeks off work. This is also dependant on your job and what you do on a daily basis. This will be discussed with your surgeon or advisor before the procedure takes place. After the procedure there will be some swelling and bruising around the treated areas. To help reduce swelling a support garment will need to be worn for approximately a month after surgery. You can gradually introduce exercise after four to six weeks.
