Cellulite Treatment

What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is fat that appears as dimpled or bumpy skin and can be described as skin with a cottage cheese or orange-peel texture. Mild cases of cellulite can only be seen by the naked eye when the skin is pinched. This is because the dimpling will appear in the pinched skin. More severe cases make the skin appear rumpled and bumpy with areas of peaks and valleys. Cellulite is most common around the thighs and buttocks, but it can be found on the breasts, lower abdomen and upper arms as well.

Cellulite is not a serious medical condition, but many women become self-conscious about their cellulite and look for ways to reduce its appearance. There is no cure for cellulite however there are treatments that can reduce it and its appearance.

What causes cellulite?

There are various reasons cellulite may occur and they are mainly to do with a combination of fatty tissue and fluid retention.

Fibrous connective cords that connect the skin to the underlying muscle can also cause cellulite. The cords join the skin to deeper structures, with fat in between them. As the fat cells build up, they press up against the skin, while the long, tough cords are pulling down. This causes an uneven surface or dimpling.

Cellulite tends to mainly affect females and many doctors believe it is caused by high levels of female hormone estrogen. It is thought that many postnatal women develop cellulite because the body can't get rid of the large flow of estrogen in the body. It affects women of all ages regardless of their weight.

The cause of Cellulite can also be linked to a person's lifestyle. Having a poor diet and lack of exercise can increase your chance of developing cellulite. Not exercising can lead to the hardening of the connective tissue which can cause further dimpling in the skin.

The natural aging process can also cause cellulite since the skin becomes thinner.
