Dermal Fillers

What are Dermal Fillers?

Besides Botox, the most popular non-surgical procedure used to achieve younger looking skin is a treatment known as dermal filler also known as 'soft tissue' filler. The demand for these dermal fillers has soared in recent years. Due to the natural ageing process our skin loses it natural fatty tissue and our collagen is damaged by the sun's ultraviolet light. This damage results in wrinkled and aged looking skin. Dermal fillers like can help smooth the skin and increase volume providing a more youthful appearance. They are long lasting but not permanent.

The most common areas that are treated with dermal fillers include:

Lines around the mouth and lips - these lines can be caused by smoking.

Nasolabial Lines - these lines run from the corners of the mouth to the base of the nose. They can also be known as smile lines.

Oral Commissures - these Mouth lines that run from the mouth to chin.

The lips - Fillers can provide extra fullness to the lips.

Forehead frown lines can also be treated with fillers but are more commonly treated in the first instance with muscle relaxant, Botox, injections. Fillers can also be used on the cheeks and chin to modify your facial shape and to give more volume.

Types of Dermal Fillers

Different types of dermal filler include:

Restylane: Restylane is based on hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance found in the body's connective tissues. It works from the inside by adding volume to your skin without affecting your natural expression. There are different Restylane products for different areas e.g. Restylane Lipp, specifically designed for lip enhancement and Restylane SubQ which is used to cheek and chin contours. These products are injected into the skin and can be combined to give the most effective result.

Juvederm: Juvederm is similar to Restylane and is also made using hyaluronic acid. It is used to restore a smoother, more youthful look to the skin. There are two types of Juvederm, Juvederm Ultra, which is used to correct moderate wrinkles on the face and add can add fullness to the lips, or Juvederm Ultra Plus which is a more dense formulation used to improve the appearance of deeper wrinkles.

Evolence: Evolence is a collagen based dermal filler which replenishes your skin's collagen that ceased over the years. As time goes by, the collagen layer which supports your skin gradually diminishes, giving rise to wrinkles lines and folds. Evolence restores your natural youthful appearance by replenishing the lost collagen, adding volume and smoothing away wrinkles.

Perlane: Perlane is part of the Resylane family and is a non-permanent and natural treatment made using hyaluronic acid that naturally occurs in the body.

Radiesse: This dermal filler is made of calcium hydroxyapatite which stimulates your body to produce new collagen.

The Dermal Filler Procedure

The treatment is performed by injecting the filler under your skin. No pre-test is needed and your procedure can usually be done in 30 minutes. It is common to use an anesthetic cream to numb the treated area, while others prefer an anesthetic block which makes the treatment painless.

Depending on the area treated, most folds and wrinkles require one treatment. Typically, the results of dermal fillers can last six to nine months but this varies from one person to another. The filler is gradually broken down and absorbed by the body, so the lines, wrinkles or lips will ultimately return to their previous appearance without top up treatments.

Following the injection or dermal fillers some swelling and redness may occur. This typically does not last longer than a week. The consultant or administrator will discuss the effects of product you choose.
