Lip Enhancement
As we age our lips become thinner and lose their definition. Some people notice fine lines forming around the bottom and corners of their lips however there are procedures available to counter this. Lip enhancement allows you to get more definition in your lips and bestow a glamorous, attractive and young-looking appearance to your face.
What is Lip Enhancement?
Lip enhancements (lip augmentation) are lip injections or implants that enhance and improve the natural appearance of your lips. It is a popular procedure for both men and men of all ages.
In order to have lip enhancement you must be generally healthy. You are not a good applicant for lip enhancement/lip augmentation if you have:
- Current cold sores.
- Certain diseases such as diabetes or lupus.
- Any scarring of the lips.
- Blood clotting problems.
There are many different products that can be used for the lip enhancement procedure. Therefore, it is a good idea if you have any type of allergy no matter how small - discuss it with your doctor during the consultation. This will help decide what type of injection or procedure is best for you. These include:
- Artecoll is a synthetic material that plumps up the lips. Because it is synthetic, you are at higher risk of having an allergic reaction to it than if you got an injection of collagen or fat. The positive factor is that it lasts longer than both do.
- Autologen is an injection of your own collagen, taken from another place on your body. There is no risk of allergic reaction; however, the results are only for a short-term. This may be good for people who are not ready to commit to a permanent result.
- Collagen can be extracted and injected into the lips. There is a slight risk of allergic reaction as the collagen may be taken from another source. A good idea is to have your surgeon or specialist give you a small measured quantity before proceeding to the full dose to test your lip area to make sure you do not have any negative side effects. The results are brief lasting only 4 weeks to three months.
- Fat from your thighs or abdomen can be injected into your lips. There is no risk of allergic reaction and you may get permanent results. This procedure can be implanted surgically.
- Hylaform is a material created from a natural body substance called hyaluronic acid. You have to see your practitioner frequently because the results are temporary.
- Restylane is an injectable gel containing hyaluronic acid which closely resembles the body's own hyaluronic acid. Restylane helps to fill and add volume to the lips. Results can last up to six months before the product is absorbed into the body.
After the Lip Enhancement Procedure?
Results can be seen immediately. How long the effect lasts is dependent on the individual and the product used. You may experience some swelling or slight bruising. If swelling does occur it generally lasts no more than two days and people who have this treatment can go back to their normal routine straight away.
